One of the reasons I decided Northeast was where I wanted to live was the vibrant art scene and for that reason, I am excited to share that Art-A-Whirl 2015 is almost here!
In case you missed it, Northeast Minneapolis was named the Best Art District by USA Today in their 10Best Reader’s Choice poll a couple months ago. It’s Organizations like NEMAA and events like their annual Art-A-Whirl that have helped to shed the light on this great art community.
Art-A-Whirl 2015 is the 20th year of Art-A-Whirl and it’s happening May 15 – 17 in NE Minneapolis (obviously).
There will be over 500 NEMAA Members displaying their artwork in over 50 locations throughout Northeast; studio buildings, art galleries, home studios, and local businesses who show their support by showcasing local artists.
Art-A-Whirl 2015 Dates:
Friday, May 15: 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Saturday, May 16: NOON to 8:00 PM
Sunday, May 17: NOON to 5:00 PM
You can download the artist guide/map HERE to plan your route ahead of time!
My favorite gallery last year was Andrea’s Art Gallery. There was just something both haunting and beautiful about Andrea’s acrylic paintings. For a first timer I would definitely recommend heading to the larger studio building like the Solar Arts Building, Northrup King Building, or The Waterbury Building, because they showcase a wide variety of art, meaning you can see more!
The best part of Art-A-Whirl is how involved the whole community gets and if you somehow leave without feeling that, then you’re doing it wrong.
A lot of the places previously reviewed on Hipster Hack: Dangerous Man, Indeed, Eli’s East, Anchor Fish & Chips, Hazel’s and so many more, also participate! So be sure to stop by and get some food/drinks!
Art-A-Whirl can get crazy, so if at all possible, I’d strongly suggest being on foot or on bike. Parking is near impossible to find and there are usually crowds of people making it hard to maneuver anyway. Visit this NEMAA link for free Metro Transit passes, Uber Rides, and trolley routes!
