Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit Oktoberfest | Northeast Minneapolis

Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit Oktoberfest has come and gone. Some friends and I made it there this last Saturday, which happened to be the last day of Oktoberfest this year.

In order to eat or drink you needed to buy tokens. Tokens which are $5 a piece.

Everything was also cash only, so if you want to avoid a long ATM line and a $3 ATM fee, I would suggest making a pit stop for cash on the way. Continue reading

St. Anthony Main Theatre | Northeast Minneapolis

St. Anthony Main Theatre
Standard

St. Anthony Main Theatre is the Northeast choice for film festivals and artsy movie screenings. The historical site has a loyal local following and a great vantage point of the river. It’s also been recently renovated.

Movies:

While they do play blockbusters, the great part about the St. Anthony Main Movie Theatre is that they show a lot of the “limited screenings” and they’re the home of the MSP Film Society and the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival.

You can get a list of the MSP Film Society Films and Events HERE. Continue reading

Gorkha Palace | Northeast Minneapolis

Gorkha Palace
Standard

The first time I went to Gorkha Palace was with my sister, Ashley, before I had moved to Northeast. We were driving around looking for something different since she was visiting me “in the city” from the deep country a.k.a New Richmond, Wisconsin, where people have gardens with rows of vegetables, chickens that they plan on eating later as pets, and a four wheeler path in their backyard…hicks. Right, Ash? Haha.

Anyway, once she saw the sign for the Gorkha Palace she was set on getting Naan, and I was ready to try something new.

It ended up being the best decision we could have made. The food was delicious, the service was great, and for months I’ve been craving it, but haven’t yet found someone willing to venture back with me. So I finally gave in to my craving and ordered take-out. Continue reading

Indeed Brewing Company | Northeast Minneapolis

Indeed Brewing Company
Standard

Indeed Brewing Company is one of my favorites. I’ve now experienced it during every season and while patio weather is clearly the most ideal, especially since they have a pretty legit food truck line-up, it’s still a really fun place to be in the winter.

Drinks:

Indeed Brewing

I have a weakness for their seasonal varietals. Mexican Honey was by far my favorite, but I’m also a pretty big fan of the LSD which has a really intriguing Lavender component.

Last week I was privileged to get a tour from Indeed Bartender/Bouncer/Busser Extraordinaire, Ben Hering. The truly amazing thing about Indeed is how successful they’ve managed to be in such a short amount of time. They’ve really gotten their recipe and their distribution down and it was cool to get a behind the scenes look. Continue reading

Where Do Hipsters Buy Their Glasses?

Standard

Hipster frames are pretty standard for the glasses wearing population of Northeast Minneapolis and ever since finally succumbing to the realization that I can’t drive without wearing them (thank you state of Minnesota), I’ve acquired what I can lovingly call a glasses fetish.

So to change it up a little I thought I’d do a blog review of the three online stores I’ve bought my glasses from: Warby Parker, Coastal, and Zenni Optical. Continue reading

Matchbox Coffee Shop Northeast

I’ve been eyeing Matchbox Coffee Shop for a couple weeks, but everytime I go past it in the morning I’m already 10 minutes behind schedule so there’s just no time to stop.

Located next to Dangerous Man Brewery (another place on my to-go list) this is an extremely tiny and long shop that almost seems like it was once an alley between two buildings, but added a roof.

Service:

This is a cash only establishment, so unfortunately, I had went against my gut and didn’t take cash out before, meaning I had to awkwardly walk out, go get cash, then return. Don’t mind me…

The barista was really friendly and the customers openly greeted me, bringing me to the environment… Continue reading

Que Viet Village House | Northeast Minneapolis

Qui Viet Eggroll
Standard

My friend, Andy, has been insisting that I need to try Que Viet in Northeast and last week we finally made it there for lunch.

As a native Northeasterner, I had no cause not to trust his recommendation, so when he insisted it was the best asian food he’s ever tasted, I wasn’t surprised when he was right.

Disclaimer: while this is a “Vietnamese restaurant” it isn’t very traditional. It’s more of an Americanized version of Vietnamese. Continue reading

Somewhere In A Dark City : Vision The Kid & Tru

Standard

Vision The Kid & Tru released their new album, “Somewhere In A Dark City,” today and I’m definitely not mad about it. Being able to put in some headphones and blare this Midwest love story on repeat, is the ideal way to return to the office after a Labor Day weekend vacation.

A couple weeks ago the first single, “Devil” was released, and I have to say that this video was the best one, creatively, that I’ve seen produced by the Be Easy Music crew (although Lost Summer is still a personal favorite). Directed by Colin Kopp and featuring some stark white and black imagery, it gave the story a fresh perspective. Plus, a pyro at heart, who doesn’t love shit set on fire? Continue reading

Legends Bar And Grill | Northeast Minneapolis

If you’re in the mood for a liquid brunch or lunch, Legends Bar & Grill in Northeast is my recommended stop, solely, because of the Bloody Mary’s that are as big as my head.

Drinks:

As previously stated, their large, 25 oz., Bloody Mary is giant. It also comes with a “buddy” on the side.

bud lite

Loaded with a freakishly large celery stick, meat stick, pickle, olive, hot pepper, and shrimp, it’s safe to say this is a meal. Not being a fan of shrimp, which I was once informed was one chromosome away from being a cockroach, I wasn’t that impressed by it’s inclusion, but most of my lunch companions don’t share my same aversion to the cockroach of the sea.

The bloody had it’s fair share of spice, without being too excessive. I’d give it a 9/10. Word to the wise: don’t get the large if you’re planning on getting food, too. I wasn’t able to finish mine, because it’s legitimately a liquid meal. Continue reading
