Let me just preface this with how excited I am that finally someone was smart enough to open up a restaurant close to Indeed Brewing Company and Able Seedhouse + Brewery. While food trucks are a brewery staple, it just did not make sense that there was this whole area of Northeast without viable food options. With that I would like to say thank you to Centro @ Popol Vuh for being smart enough to join the neighborhood and for being open in time for my birthday celebration!

Hai Hai | Northeast Minneapolis
StandardOnce upon a time, on the corner of University and 22nd Ave NE, there was a magical place called the Deuce Deuce/Double Deuce/the 22nd Avenue Gentleman’s Club.
26 Year old Tara first heard of this place when she worked at a Minneapolis Liquor Distributor and was surrounded by middle aged salesmen who made questionably sketchy comments about how they liked to end their Friday night sales calls “at their home office there.” However, Tara was never to satisfy her curiosity of the place that inspired yelp user Jorge to leave a permanent review for, stating that “the only thing harder than my dick, was having to leave the place,” because it closed. #RIP
Speeding ahead, the only thing more upsetting than not getting to experience going there was living so close to this building and having to pass the graffiti’d eyesore everyday.
When Tara first heard it was to be bought by the people who owned Hola Arepa, she was beyond excited and even MORE excited to realize they had such a great sense of humor when they named their new Southeast Asian street food restaurant & bar, “Hai Hai” which means “22” in Vietnamese. A tongue in cheek homage to the building’s roots. Continue reading
Miracle At Lawless Distilling | Minneapolis
StandardNow through December, Lawless Distilling Company is the home of one of 50 Holiday pop-ups around the country, originating in New York City, that features hilariously named Christmakkuh drinks. The event is called “Miracle at Lawless,” and although it did require a bit of a wait to get in, due to the low capacity, which is something people who live in Minnesota are just not known to tolerate doing during the winter, the mild weather made it an ok night to stand under the heater and shoot shit with the bouncer until it was our turn to elbow our way through the crowd.

Norseman Distillery Cocktail Room | Northeast Minneapolis
StandardI had the opportunity to try out the new Norseman Distillery Cocktail Room a few weeks ago for a friend’s birthday.
We had a pretty large party, but were lucky to score one of the couch seating areas due to some intense creeping next to some who were getting ready to leave. Standard.

Carma Coffee | Northeast Minneapolis
StandardCarma Coffee located off Lowry Ave. in Northeast is most likely recognizable as having a very similar name to the business next to them, Good Carma Auto Repair, who has been their partner since they opened in 2014.
After years of forgetting Carma Coffee existed until I was driving by, a hankering for a new Sunday coffee stop and a mention from a fellow Northeast dweller, finally made Carma Coffee top of mind. A decision I’m delighted with.

Bunny’s Bar & Grill NE | Northeast Minneapolis
StandardWhile Northeast does have many things, one thing that seems pretty lacking is Sports Bars. Besides Stanley’s, every other location is pretty dive or niche. So the triumphant opening of Bunny’s Bar & Grill NE was actually pretty exciting, not to mention their location in St. Louis Park has such a cult following from many of my suburb friends.
Having opened the week before Superbowl Sunday, they were not only my choice location to explain Football to our visiting British friend, but they were also my choice place to celebrate Adult Easter (seemed fitting) and continue to remain one of my favorite weekend beverage destinations.

Able Seedhouse + Brewery | Northeast Minneapolis
StandardAnother year, another Northeast Minneapolis brewery. I’d have to say the greatest assets for Able is their visibility from Broadway and their patio!

PinKU Japanese Street Food | Northeast Minneapolis
Standard
Sandwiched between Keegan’s and JL Beers, PinKU Japanese Street Food is a must try.
Having recently moved back to Northeast Minneapolis after 6 months of pretending we could be happy in the suburbs, I was beyond excited to get back to trying new Minneapolis restaurants and the non-chain restaurant life. Being a novice sushi eater, and completely averse to shrimp, thanks to once being told that shrimp were 1 chromosome away from a cockroach (you’re welcome for that, too), I was minorly hesitant when my boyfriend suggested we try PinKU. It proved to be completely unwarranted. Continue reading
